I forgot to mention that the points exist but are much smaller than the usual shape.

Yes that seems to be also a trend in the trade, less red and variation on the shape and size of that mark. I just found some (hard to find "serpae" these days...), at his stage no mark visible even on the biggest and if the fins have a dark orange-red colour the body is more pale orange. I think that this species should be quite intense in color orange-red and have a vertical black mark. I guess this is not so easy to find as much of them come from mass reproduction that led to different commercial strains. Yours are nicer than mine, I just hope that with the time they can get a bit more colorful; they are already a bit better after few days.

pvert: I don't know if it's a trend or a degradation. Good luck with yours.

Please help me with an opinion on Mesonauta please. The fish have spawned but I don't know if they are a pair or two females. The eggs turn white every 3-4 days after laying.

Nice!
For the Mensonauta, can’t tell you, but it is possible. I had this kind of behavior between two females A. Panduro; I thought that the bigger one could be the male with still juvenile features, but specialists on the forum told me it could not be a male, and indeed few days after I saw her even not laying eggs but expulsing them. I introduced a very young male, the biggest female died, the male became a big colored specimen, but they never spawn... this is another story.
Otherwise, I do not know how frequent are male cichlids sterile.
As for the « Serpae « , they gained color but no black mark and they will never be dark red. Apart from long fin selection variant (never seen them, and frankly strange taste plus knowing how they can nip each other’s fins), it would be interesting to get the point of view of an expert: selection of variant by breeders or geographical origins of F0 parents or actually different species?

Thanks Pvert, I got a male from a friend. Let's see what happens. Here is a video:

Yes, I saw several times these videos and maybe the color of the fish in the wild is significantly redder or the color balance is off. Actually now, my serpae look much better and healthier and I see on some of them
a very very discreet blackish mark. I chose this fish on the basis of this particular biotope of rio sucuri, very clear water, neutral or even slightly basic and big bushes of Heteranthera zosterifolia.
